23 Moldovan Athletes to Compete at the European Youth Olympic Festival — Maia Sandu Hands Over the National Flag

Twenty-three athletes will represent the Republic of Moldova at the European Youth Olympic Festival, set to take place in Skopje, North Macedonia. On Tuesday, July 15, President Maia Sandu handed them the national flag.

President Sandu wished the team success and emphasized that, beyond their athletic achievements, the athletes would convey a powerful message about the dedication of the next generation and the value of a healthy lifestyle.

“In Moldova, we are experiencing a true revival of sports. In 2022, 2023, and 2024, our athletes achieved outstanding results at international competitions, including the Olympic Games. You are living proof that with true determination, anything is possible. I wish you great success, focus, and positive energy in every event,” said the President.

She also highlighted the government’s sustained efforts to strengthen national sports in recent years. Authorities enacted a new Sports Law promoting athletic excellence, school fitness, and healthy lifestyles. Over 100 gyms and sports fields across the country have undergone modernization, and scholarships for athletes have increased.

The European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) is a multi-sport event organized by the European Olympic Committees. It serves as a launchpad for young athletes aspiring to compete in European, world, and Olympic championships. The first edition took place in Brussels in 1991.

This year, Moldova’s delegation will include 23 athletes and their coaches competing in badminton, athletics, swimming, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, cycling, and shooting.
