Moldova’s parliament of the eleventh legislative period has achieved a historic milestone with 41 women MPs, marking a record in the country’s parliamentary history. The majority of these women are affiliated with the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) faction, while ten are members of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BECS) faction, and two are independent lawmakers.
Furthermore, women hold leadership roles in five of the 11 standing parliamentary commissions, showcasing their increasing presence and influence within the legislative body. Notably, the proportion of women members in the parliament’s standing bureau exceeds 30 percent.
The parliament’s commitment to gender equality and the advancement of women’s rights is evident, with these issues occupying a prominent place on the legislative agenda. Numerous laws have been enacted to improve women’s living conditions and enhance their participation in social life. Initiatives include the establishment of the Agency for the Prevention and Combating of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, as well as measures to support women on maternity leave to reintegrate into the workforce while receiving both salary and allowances.
Additionally, women now benefit from increased protection and safety in both public and private life, with legislative frameworks such as the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence and amendments to the Labour Code enabling flexible work schedules to accommodate professional and family responsibilities.

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu reaffirmed the commitment to women’s empowerment and equality, emphasizing efforts to provide equal opportunities and a secure environment for the development of all women and girls in Moldova.
Beyond representation in parliament, women play a significant role in the parliamentary secretariat, constituting 75 percent of all civil servants, with 17 of the 25 public offices being led by women. Moreover, the parliament’s secretariat itself is headed by a woman, underscoring the strides made towards gender parity and female leadership in Moldova’s parliamentary institutions.
