The European Union and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have launched a groundbreaking initiative, committing 10 million euros to propel Moldova’s journey towards a sustainable future. This transformative project, titled “Facilitation of Inclusive Green Transition in Moldova,” will be for four years and was unveiled on Europe Day, May 9th, at the European Town.
This endeavor aligns with the EU’s Green Deal, an ambitious framework to guide Moldova’s integration efforts while fostering a resilient, eco-friendly economy. By bolstering awareness, building institutional capacity, and catalyzing investments in low-emission, resource-efficient practices, the project aims to propel Moldova towards climate neutrality in alignment with the Paris Agreement commitments.
Daniela Gasparikova, UNDP Resident Representative in Moldova, emphasizes the project’s role in steering Moldova’s green transition. It will empower businesses and citizens to embrace sustainable technologies and habits, spurring the emergence of environmentally responsible enterprises. It will promote circular economy principles to minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency. The project seeks to create a fertile ground for innovative, eco-conscious businesses to flourish.

Moreover, the project will serve as a testing ground for green innovations across various sectors, promoting models of business that prioritize recycling, reusing, and repairing. Solomon Ioannou, a program manager at the European Union’s Delegation in Moldova, underscores the broader economic benefits of this transition. By investing in renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, and green technologies, Moldova safeguards the planet and unlocks new avenues for job creation, innovation, and economic growth. Transitioning to a low-carbon economy will also alleviate reliance on fossil fuels, improve air quality, and enhance overall well-being.
In addition to economic transformation, the project targets systemic change through initiatives – promoting producer responsibility, advancing renewable energy technologies, establishing energy plantations for biomass production, and piloting sustainable mobility measures. By encouraging individuals to adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives and supporting entrepreneurs in developing sustainable businesses, the project aims to foster a collective commitment to the green transition cause.
