Moldovan wine is selling more and more expensive! Who are the main importers of our wines?

In 2023, wine exports increased by 18% in volume and 24% in value compared to 2022, indicating stronger international demand and recognition of wine quality, according to the National Office of Vine and Wine.

America also witnesses a significant increase in exports of Moldovan wines, with an 84% increase in value. The average export price for bottled “still” wines increased by 9% to 1.70 USD/bottle. Japan has the highest average price of USD 3.29/bottle of wine.

The volume of Moldovan wine exports reached 192 million USD. However, total wine production in Moldova decreased by 13% during the same period.

Moldova exported 123 million liters of wine in 2023, with a significant share of 55% to EU countries. Among Moldova’s main partners in wine exports is Romania, where exports reached USD 30.4 million, Poland with USD 8.2 million, the Czech Republic with USD 7.4 million, the United States with USD 6.7 million and China with USD 4.8 million.

Exports of spirits and distillates grew more spectacularly – by 75% to $51 million, with volumes more than doubling, mainly due to bulk exports.

However, overly warm weather and a lack of rain mainly caused the fall in domestic wine production in 2023, hurting the 2022 harvest. It has raised concerns in Moldova’s wine industry.

Moldova exports around 85% of its wine production to 68 countries, emphasizing the importance of exports for Moldova’s wine industry. Despite domestic production challenges, growing exports reflect continued international interest in Moldovan wines.
