Separatists want their own referendum on EU accession?! “We consider it appropriate…”

The so-called foreign ministry in Tiraspol stated that a referendum on European Union accession in the separatist region is appropriate. In the statement, the institution accused Chisinau of ignoring the views of residents on the left bank of the Dniester.

The self-proclaimed authorities express dissatisfaction over the lack of polling stations opening across the Dniester. They accuse Chisinau of ignoring the views of Transnistrians regarding the referendum.

“Throughout last year, the Moldovan side made no effort to initiate dialogue about the referendum. It is evident that Chisinau does not need our citizens, is not interested in their opinions, but conveniently speculates about its ‘concern’ for the rights of Transnistrians.”

“About Moldova’s plans to ignore the position of the Transnistrian people, without even attempting to propose the opening of polling stations on Transnistrian territory to obtain the opinions of Transnistrians, we find it appropriate to organize a referendum regarding attitudes toward the European Union in our territory,” the statement reads.

The separatist authority claims they can organize such a referendum based on bilateral agreements, with international observers participating.

We note that on October 20, 2024, a referendum will occur in Moldova alongside the presidential elections. Citizens will vote on whether they support the country’s European integration. For those living on the left bank of the Nistru River, 30 polling stations have been set up for them to cast their votes.
