Romania has officially taken over gas supplies to Moldova, which currently depends on imports from Romania for most of its energy needs. According to data provided by Energocom, two-thirds of Moldova’s total gas imports in the first nine months of the year came from major Romanian producers Petrom and Romgaz.
Moldova currently imports about 3 million cubic meters of gas per day from Romania, which means that a year, Romania supplies almost all of Moldova’s gas needs, estimated at 1 billion cubic meters. This gas comes both from Romania’s domestic production and from Moldova’s gas stocks, which benefit from Romania’s underground storage capacity, according to Profit.ro, bani.md reports.
A significant component of this energy partnership is the Iasi-Ungheni gas pipeline, inaugurated in 2020, which directly links Romania and Moldova. With an annual capacity of 1.5 billion cubic meters, this pipeline can cover Moldova’s entire gas consumption. Ukraine’s plan to stop Russian gas transit through its territory in 2025 will increase the pipeline’s significance, further highlighting Romania’s role in Moldova’s energy security.

Romania, which sources nearly all its domestic gas needs locally (except during the cold season), has its underground storage filled, enabling it to support Moldova even during severe winters. Additionally, with the expected start of gas production from the Black Sea in 2027, Romania will be positioned to supply even more gas, solidifying its role as Moldova’s primary energy partner.
