Chisinau Mayor General Ion Ceban announced that dozens of teachers in the municipality risk not receiving their salaries, blaming the Government for the situation. In a video statement, Ceban argued that paying teachers’ salaries is the responsibility of central public authorities, not local ones. However, the municipality reportedly received 165 million lei less than needed.
“Of the 200 million lei that the law requires the Government to transfer for teachers’ salaries and bonuses, only 36 million lei was transferred. It is a new tactic by the Government to weaken the municipal budget and, once again, shift blame onto Chisinau City Hall for responsibilities that lie with the Government. The City Hall must invest in repairing, expanding, constructing, and maintaining educational institutions. We have been doing this in recent years because schools and kindergartens have not undergone major repairs since their foundation. The central budget funds teachers’ salaries under the legal framework and labor code, with Chisinau contributing over 60 billion lei annually to that budget,” Ceban said.
He further criticized the Government for its financial policies, accusing it of cutting funds for personal assistants, raising salaries for civil servants without compensating municipalities, and slashing teachers’ salaries and bonuses. “What’s next? Are you going to make Chisinau pay pensions? Let me send you a message: you will be accountable for your decisions. Don’t assume you will remain in Government forever,” Ceban warned.
Government representatives declined to comment on the accusations when contacted by realitatea.md.
