European Union officials are discussing gas supplies to Transnistria with the Chisinau administration. Janis Mazeiks, head of the EU delegation in Chisinau, announced during the Forum for European Integration of the Republic of Moldova.
The diplomat highlighted that EU institutions stand ready to intervene but stressed that Moldova must develop a comprehensive plan to address any potential crisis.
“The Republic of Moldova is in a far stronger position now than a few years ago. Technically, the country can ensure gas supplies to the Transnistrian region. However, the Moldovan government must carefully assess this issue, which is why the energy minister visited St. Petersburg for talks. It gives us reason to remain optimistic.

In the past, Moldova has faced significant difficulties. While we are committed to supporting the country, we hope external intervention will not be necessary this time. Several factors, including a contingency plan, bolster this confidence,” Mazeiks said.
The European Commission earlier called on Chisinau to draft detailed contingency plans in case Russian gas transit through Ukraine starting January 2025. According to documents released by the Cabinet of Ministers, potential solutions include sourcing electricity from the European market.
