Maia Sandu held a meeting in Brussels with Roberta Metsola: “The European Parliament strongly supports us on our path towards the EU”

President Maia Sandu met with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to discuss the next steps on Moldova’s path toward European integration.

Maia Sandu described the meeting as a “warm” discussion and highlighted the European Parliament’s support for Moldova’s European aspirations. “We talked about the steps we may take to build a European Moldova where people live well, safely, and with dignity. Our European partners stand with us and trust Moldova, giving us the strength to move forward,” she wrote on her Facebook account.

On December 10, President Sandu met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss Moldova’s EU accession process, European support for Moldova, and initiatives to improve citizens’ lives. The meeting, held against the backdrop of the newly formed European Commission, emphasized continuity and the strengthening of Moldova-EU relations. The two leaders agreed to accelerate justice reforms and increase European support for this process to €10 million.

Additionally, Maia Sandu paid an official visit to NATO Headquarters in Brussels to mark the 30th anniversary of the Moldova-NATO Partnership for Peace. During her meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, discussions focused on regional security, hybrid threats—such as election interference and electoral corruption—and the need for joint actions to protect democracies in the region.

President Sandu’s working visit to Brussels on December 10–11 was her first following the referendum affirming Moldova’s European integration course.
