Marta Kos delivers a strong message: Moldova can join the EU before the end of the European Commission’s mandate

European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos believes that the Republic of Moldova can join the European Union by the end of the European Commission’s term. She made this statement during a press conference in Chisinau. It is important to note that the new European Commission officially began its mandate on December 1, 2024, which will last until 2029.

Kos praised the authorities in Chisinau, mentioning that she sees Moldova’s desire to join the European family.

“I am convinced there will be many more visits during my term. You mentioned your desire to see the negotiation process completed during this term. I believe in its completion by the end of the European Commission’s mandate. I see how eager you are, and how eager your Government is, to fulfill everything that needs to be done to become European Union members. … What you Moldovans are doing on your path to the European Union to obtain membership is impressive. Your country is an excellent example of what happens when there is enormous political will and a genuine vision to become a members of the European Union.

Last week, I visited Warsaw to discuss with the Polish presidency how we could best collaborate to open the first negotiation cluster this spring and prepare the two clusters for opening. We will celebrate this, and I believe we will soon celebrate the opening of the first cluster. It is not just about opening the cluster but also about its closure. However, to open it, you have to do a lot. I can promise you that you will never be alone on this journey to the European Union,” the Commissioner stated.

President Maia Sandu also confirmed that our country aims for the same goal.
“We have an ambitious goal to complete the accession negotiations within the mandate of the current European Commission. Commissioner Marta Kos, thank you for your visit and thank you for your commitment to Moldova. I want to tell you again that we count on this support in the future. Our future is in the European Union, and together we will make this goal a reality,” said Sandu.

Marta Kos, in her first visit to Chisinau, also spoke about the €1.8 billion support for the Republic of Moldova, including for the Transnistrian region. The Commissioner mentioned that after February 10, another support package worth €60 million could be granted, but the condition is that the Transnistrian administration respects human rights.
