Breaking News from the Government! Tiraspol Rejects EU Aid and Waits for Russian Gas

A Hungarian company, paid by a Dubai-based firm, will supply gas to Transnistria, but only up to Moldova’s border, Prime Minister Dorin Recean announced in a Facebook post. According to the information provided, Tiraspol must pay in advance for the transit costs of the gas transported from Moldova’s border to the region under an agreement between Moldovagaz and Tiraspoltransgaz.

“A company from Hungary – MET Gas and Energy Marketing AG – will be paid by JNX General Trading L.L.C. from Dubai and bring the gas to Moldova’s border. Authorities vetted both companies. MET Gas and Energy Marketing AG trades natural gas in the European market. Investigators found no irregularities regarding JNX General Trading L.L.C. under national or international law. Likewise, they did not identify any Moldovan citizens behind these companies. MET Gas and Energy Marketing AG will deliver the gas to Moldova’s border under its contract with Moldovagaz.

Recean stated that Tiraspol will pay in advance for the transit costs of the gas transported from Moldova’s border to the region under an agreement between Moldovagaz and Tiraspoltransgaz.

“We are allowing this transit, and Tiraspol will take certain steps to show openness: releasing political detainees, resolving the issue of the school in Ribnita, keeping Moldova’s public television in the channel lineup, and removing the 33 control posts set up in 2022 (of which 11 are still active). Important: this is not an agreement between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and Russia or any other entity, but rather a permission to ensure that people in the Transnistrian region receive gas and do not freeze,” the Government stated.

Recean also announced that Tiraspol has rejected the European Union’s financial assistance, referring to the €60 million grant.

“The EU’s offer of €60 million was a solution to free the Transnistrian region from blackmail and energy instability. Tiraspol rejected this solution. Russia does not allow them to accept European aid because of losing control over the region. The key condition that Tiraspol refused was the gradual increase of consumer tariffs. As a result, they cannot receive the €60 million in European aid. The solution chosen by the Tiraspol regime means that people in the Transnistrian region will continue to live in a state of unpredictability and concern over gas supply. It is not a long-term solution. However, we will not block gas deliveries and let the people on the left bank freeze,” Dorin Recean stated.

The European Union has already provided a €30 million grant to supply gas to the breakaway region of Moldova. Authorities in Brussels are prepared to extend further assistance, provided that Transnistrian authorities respect human rights and adjust energy prices to market levels.
