The US slashes funding for USAID programs: 83% of contracts cancelled

After a six-week review, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has announced the cancellation of 83% of its programs. This decision affects 5,200 contracts, which have cost tens of billions of dollars without effectively advancing U.S. national interests, and in some cases, have even undermined them.

According to official statements from Marco Rubio, only 18% of the existing programs, or approximately 1,000 initiatives, will remain. These programs will be managed more efficiently under the coordination of the State Department, following consultations with U.S. Congress.

The reform, deemed historic, required significant efforts from USAID staff. Officials emphasized that this decision represents a major shift in how the U.S. handles foreign assistance.
