Hurezeanu delivers a clear message at the Brussels diplomatic meeting: Romania wants Moldova and Ukraine in the EU

Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu supported the accession of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to the European Union during a meeting of EU member state foreign ministers in Brussels, reports adevarul.ro.

During the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC), Hurezeanu expressed strong support for establishing a just and lasting peace backed by solid and credible security guarantees and for continuing European assistance to Ukraine in the context of the war in Ukraine started by the Russian Federation.

According to a press release from the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the diplomat also emphasized the importance of holding Russia accountable for its aggression against Ukraine and the damage caused and insisted on advancing the European integration process for Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.

On the sidelines of the Foreign Affairs Council on March 17 in Brussels, European diplomats discussed Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, and EU-US relations.

The Republic of Moldova applied for EU membership on March 3, 2022, just over a week after the war in Ukraine began. Chisinau obtained candidate country status in July of the same year, alongside Kyiv.

On June 15, 2024, the ambassadors of the 27 EU member states gave a principle agreement to open accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, with the announcement made by the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council.

However, the two countries proceed separately at the negotiating table. The actual negotiations are individual and potentially lengthy, and their duration varies depending on several factors.
