Starting in April, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova can request a new type of identity card, following the European model. Prime Minister Dorin Recean made the announcement.
“A good news for all citizens of the Republic of Moldova. Starting in April, everybody can request the new European standard identity card. What are the advantages of the new identity card? First of all, the Government will offer the first million new identity cards for free, both to those in the Republic of Moldova and to our citizens in the diaspora,” said the Prime Minister.
The official also mentioned that the new identity card is not mandatory but will gradually replace the current cards. Citizens can request the card starting at 14 years old, and they will no longer need to change their identity card every time they change their address.

“The new identity card contains an electronic signature. It means that any citizen, no matter where they are, and any entrepreneur can access government online services without waiting in line at institutions, without a power of attorney, and without needing a Moldovan phone card.
As we move toward joining the European Union, the new identity cards will allow citizens to cross the border without additional documents. I encourage you to request the new identity card and take advantage of the fact that the state will offer it for free to the first million citizens,” added Dorin Recean. Mircea Esanu, Director of the Public Services Agency (ASP), presented the first sample of the new identity card on Wednesday, March 26. According to him, starting on April 2, citizens can visit ASP offices to request the document.
“I want to take this opportunity to show you the first accurate sample of the new national document. I want to make a few remarks: the law comes into force on March 31, which is a Monday. We will reserve two days, March 31 and April 1, to ensure the process works correctly.
Since April 2, citizens can visit the Public Services Agency offices to request the document. The Government will issue the free identity card, along with the electronic signature and card reader, within 20 working days,” said Esanu.
In March 2024, the deputies voted in the second reading on the project, with 79 deputies supporting it. The new identity cards will replace the current identity cards.
