Moldovans to Pay Up to 70% Less for Roaming in the EU Countries

Moldovan citizens traveling in the EU Member States will soon pay significantly less for roaming services. Parliament approved, in the second reading, new regulations that cap the cost of calls, text messages, and mobile data while abroad.

The new rules align roaming tariffs with domestic rates, allowing users to save between 30% and 70%, depending on the service. These reductions apply to voice calls, SMS, and mobile internet used within the European Union.

This decision builds on the Moldova-EU roaming agreement that took effect on January 1, 2024. That agreement marked Moldova’s first step toward joining the EU’s “Roam Like at Home” framework.

Authorities will implement the tariff cap gradually, following the EU’s schedule. In the long term, Moldova aims to eliminate roaming charges and integrate fully into the EU’s digital single market. This would allow Moldovans to use mobile services across Europe at the same cost as at home.

Officials called the reform a major benefit for travelers, students, workers, and businesses.

“This is another concrete result of our European integration process,” said a government representative. “It brings us closer to the EU politically and in the daily lives of our citizens.”
