Moldova Launches Monitoring Mechanism for Ukrainian Refugee Children in Education

The Ministry of Education and Research, in partnership with UNICEF, the UN Refugee Agency, and local education bodies, has launched a new mechanism to monitor Ukrainian refugee children enrolled in Moldova’s education system. This initiative also covers children studying remotely under the Ukrainian curriculum.

Under the new system, each specialized education body will appoint a coordinator responsible for managing the registration process. These coordinators will distribute forms developed by the Ministry to educational institutions, where parents will complete them. Authorities will verify the forms and submit the finalized data to the Ministry.

For children attending schools or kindergartens in Moldova, registration occurs directly at the institutions. For those studying online under the Ukrainian curriculum, parents can either complete the form in person at designated offices or download it and submit it via email.

“This monitoring mechanism will give us a clear understanding of how many refugee children are integrated into the education system—whether they attend school in person or learn remotely,” said Ivan Duminica, head of the Ministry’s interethnic relations policy service. “It ensures no child is left behind.”

According to the latest data, 3,510 Ukrainian refugee children are currently enrolled in Moldova’s general education system—2,530 in schools and 980 in kindergartens.
