Igor Grosu: Moldova-Romania Ties Will Remain Privileged, Regardless of Romanian Election Outcome

Speaker of Parliament Igor Grosu stated that the relationship between Chisinau and Bucharest will remain privileged, regardless of which politicians the Romanian citizens elect. He made the statement in the context of the upcoming second round of Romania’s presidential election, which will feature AUR candidate George Simion and independent candidate Nicusor Dan. Moldova’s ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) has endorsed Dan, IPN reports.

When asked about the first round, in which PAS supported Crin Antonescu, Grosu emphasized that every voter has the sovereign right to choose. “In the first round, we supported the candidate of the National Liberal Party, which, like PAS, is part of the European People’s Party. It was our duty to support the candidate from our political family,” said Grosu, who also leads PAS.

He thanked all citizens who mobilized and voted in the first round and reaffirmed PAS’s support for Nicusor Dan in the runoff.

Reporters also questioned Grosu about how Moldova-Romania relations might evolve if George Simion—currently banned from entering Moldova—is elected President. Grosu expressed confidence that bilateral ties would remain strong. However, he noted that politicians often adjust their rhetoric significantly during and after campaigns. Regarding Simion’s ban, Grosu stressed that only the court can rule on the matter, citing the principle of separation of powers.

The Speaker wished Nicusor Dan success and a “good result.”

George Simion, representing the AUR party, won 40.96% of the vote in the first round. Nicusor Dan followed with 20.99%.

In the Republic of Moldova, nearly 9,000 citizens participated in the Romanian presidential election. Nicusor Dan led with 52.63% of the vote, Crin Antonescu – 21.69%, and George Simion – 12.47%.

The runoff election will take place on May 18. Diaspora will vote three days: May 16, 17, and 18.
