Exclusive Interview with Janis Mazeiks: How the EU Plans to Support Moldova’s Energy Security Ahead of Winter

In the context of Moldova’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its energy independence and prepare for the next winter, the European Union reaffirms its strong and continued support.

Speaking about Moldova’s energy future, EU Ambassador to Moldova, Janis Mazeiks, in an exclusive interview for Moldovalive, highlighted the country’s significant progress in breaking away from dependence on Russian energy and aligning with the European energy system. He emphasized that energy resilience is not only a technical or economic issue but also one of “security, sovereignty, and dignity.”

“Moldova has made enormous progress in the past two years—ending dependence on Russian energy, joining the European electricity grid (ENTSO-E), and developing local renewable sources that now account for over 20% of the domestic electricity production,” Mazeiks stated. “The EU has been proud to support this transformation with over half a billion euros in energy assistance since late 2021, including reducing energy bills for all Moldovans, after Russia’s blackmail resulted in a painful increase.”

Looking ahead, the EU and Moldova are working together to fully align Moldova’s independent and sustainable energy sector with the EU system. The two sides have agreed on a Joint Reform Agenda, setting the main priorities for the next three years.

“These steps include, among others, supporting energy efficiency projects, upgrading infrastructure, expanding storage capacity, and helping vulnerable households cope with increasing energy costs,” the Ambassador explained.

He pointed out that, thanks to EU support, Moldova has already improved energy efficiency in 24 public buildings, including national and regional hospitals. Residential buildings are also being modernized with grants and credit lines, while over 200,000 vulnerable households have received direct financial aid to offset energy costs.

“Moldova has shown the region what true energy independence looks like—and we will continue to stand by your side,” Mazeiks concluded.
