President Maia Sandu Turns 53 Today: First Woman Elected President, Now in Second Term

President Maia Sandu of the Republic of Moldova celebrates her birthday today. Born on May 24, 1972, in the village of Risipeni, Falesti district, she turns 53 and currently serves her second term as head of state, IPN reported.

Maia Sandu became the first woman elected as President of Moldova. She won her first term in December 2020 after winning the second round of presidential elections on November 15. Four years later, in December 2024, citizens re-elected her through a direct vote, making her the first president in the country’s history to achieve this milestone.

She studied in Moldova and the United States, graduating from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. Between 2010 and 2012, she served as an adviser to the executive director of the World Bank in Washington. She later held the position of Minister of Education, then served as a Member of Parliament, and briefly as Prime Minister.

President Sandu now leads the country through a complex regional context, focusing on reforms, European integration, and security.
