Moldova and Bulgaria Seek Closer Cooperation: Bulgarian Foreign Minister Visits Chisinau

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi welcomed Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev to Chisinau on Sunday, May 25, during his working visit to the Republic of Moldova.

During their discussions, both officials reviewed the current state of Moldova-Bulgaria relations and reaffirmed their joint commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation. They focused on expanding their partnership in key areas such as education, energy, and trade.

The two ministers emphasized the importance of the Bulgarian community in Moldova in deepening ties between the two countries and praised Bulgaria’s development projects supporting this community.

“Protecting and promoting national identity, as well as ensuring the rights of the Bulgarian community—especially access to education in their native language—remain priorities in our bilateral relationship,” stated Minister Mihai Popsoi.

Minister Popsoi also highlighted Moldova’s progress on the path to European integration and thanked Bulgaria for its steadfast support:

“Bulgaria’s support, beyond its commitment to the Bulgarian ethnic community in Moldova, reflects the Bulgarian government’s openness to supporting our country’s development and European path. Bulgaria and Moldova have always enjoyed excellent cooperation that has delivered tangible results. Moldova is on a consistent path with its commitments, and we believe this process will continue. We support the accession negotiations and your efforts to become a full member of the European family. Bulgaria has stood and will continue to stand by Moldova’s strategic journey because we believe this is the right path,” stated Georg Georgiev.

The visit also provided an opportunity to assess economic and energy cooperation. The two ministers discussed boosting trade and launching joint initiatives to strengthen regional energy security.

“We agreed to intensify joint efforts to increase trade and strengthen the bilateral legal framework, to facilitate investments and promote sustainable economic development for the benefit of both countries,” declared Deputy Prime Minister Popsoi.

In conclusion, both sides agreed to maintain a permanent, constructive, and pragmatic dialogue based on the traditional friendship that connects Moldova and Bulgaria for the direct benefit of their citizens.
