General Prosecutor Post Vacant as Ion Munteanu Joins Supreme Court of Justice

The Republic of Moldova no longer has a General Prosecutor after Ion Munteanu officially became a judge of the Supreme Court of Justice. His appointment took effect on May 26, following the publication of the presidential decree in the Official Journal.

The Superior Council of Magistracy nominated Munteanu for the position after he won a public competition held for this purpose.

President Maia Sandu appointed Munteanu as General Prosecutor on June 1, 2024, based on a proposal by the Superior Council of Prosecutors.

Munteanu, who has served as a prosecutor since 2006, began his career at the Capital’s Prosecutor’s Office. He joined the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office in July 2010 and served as interim deputy chief prosecutor in 2019–2020 and again in 2021–2022. On October 12, 2022, he replaced Dumitru Robu as interim General Prosecutor.

Under current law, the Supreme Court of Justice includes 20 judges: 11 selected from career judges and nine from among lawyers, prosecutors, or law professors.
