Romanian language – the rebirth of a nation. History-making Events

Every year, on August 31, the Romanian soul trembles in the same rhythm on both sides of the Prut. The Day of the Romanian Language is not just a symbolic commemoration, but a profound reconnection with our historical, cultural and spiritual identity. For the Republic of Moldova, this day carries a special resonance. The history of this holiday is marked by events of tension, courage and rebirth. All of them led to the eventual formalization of the Romanian language in the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.

On August 27, 1989, an act of national dignity marked the beginning of a new path. More than 700 000 citizens gathered on the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau to demand the declaration of Romanian as a state language and a return to Latin script. As a result of this mobilization, two days later, on 29 August 1989, the 13th session of the Supreme Soviet of the MSSR opened its work, which lasted until 1 September. After intense debates with their opponents, the Romanian-speaking deputies succeeded in having Romanian declared the state language and adopted the Latin alphabet. The most heated discussions in the Supreme Soviet took place on August 31, when most of the legislation on the state language and alphabet is also voted on.

In 1990, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova decreed August 31 as a national holiday, under the name “Our Romanian Language”. In 1994 the name was changed to “Our Language”. However, the holiday continues to be called Romanian Language Day.

In 2004, the Parliament tried to combine the Language Day with Independence Day, which never happened. Since the arrival of the liberal administration at the head of the Chisinau municipality, the holiday has regained the name “Our Romanian Language”, at least in the capital.

And it was only on March 2, 2023 that the Parliament renamed the holiday “Romanian Language”. Thus, the Day of the Romanian Language remains in the Republic of Moldova a moment of reflection and celebration of the language that unites and defines us as a nation.
