Spinu confirms that the head of the Central Customs Office, suspected of corruption, is his godfather. “I recommended him”

Former Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spinu confirmed that Iurie Gorea, the head of the Central Customs Office and currently under investigation for corruption, is his godfather. Spinu also acknowledged that he recommended Gorea for the post.

He stated it during TV8’s Cutia Neagra (Black Box) program, where Spinu openly defended Gorea. He claimed much of the publicly circulated information regarding the case is false.

“I’ve seen a lot of lies circulating in the public space. It started with all kinds of pictures suggesting a flagrant arrest, which is untrue. It wasn’t a flagrant case. Mr. Gorea was driving when the police stopped and searched him. There was also talk of astronomical sums allegedly found at his home—again, false,” said Spinu.

Spinu emphasized that he would not comment on the criminal files, stressing that he has known Gorea for over a decade. He said he prefers to let lawyers handle the case before concluding.

Authorities detained Iurie Gorea on suspicion of accepting around $40,000 in bribes, allegedly received in multiple installments. In exchange, he reportedly overlooked customs violations and facilitated the import of goods, including items bound for the Transnistrian region. The court placed Gorea under preventive arrest.
