Moldova Reaffirms Commitment to European Security and Defense Alignment

Moldova remains firmly committed to aligning its national defense system with the European security and defense architecture, Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatii said during a meeting of the European Parliament’s Security and Defense Committee (SEDE) in Brussels.

Nosatii outlined Moldova’s growing security challenges, specifically citing hybrid threats and foreign interference in democratic processes.

“Moldova is not facing a conventional war, but a hybrid one,” the minister stated, pointing to disinformation campaigns, cyberattacks, and energy blackmail as key threats.

He emphasized the importance of the Moldova–EU Security and Defense Partnership, signed one year ago, which he described as a critical framework for strengthening bilateral cooperation. Nosatii also called on the European Union to support Moldova’s efforts to build defense and security capabilities, especially in cybersecurity, strategic communication, and combating hybrid threats.

The minister expressed gratitude for assistance received through the European Peace Facility (EPF), which has helped modernize Moldova’s defense forces.

“Since 2021, the EU has approved €197 million in assistance to strengthen Moldova’s defense capabilities, making us the second largest beneficiary of this instrument,” Nosatii noted. “This support has improved our military mobility, operational readiness, and national resilience in the face of hybrid challenges.”

Nosatii also underscored the active role of Moldova’s National Army in international peacekeeping efforts. Moldovan troops currently contribute to EU Common Security and Defense Policy operations, including EUFOR ALTHEA in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the EU Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM).

“We are ready to expand our participation in other international peacekeeping operations,” he added.

In closing, Nosatii stated that Moldova’s experience demonstrates how resilience, democracy, and security can be strengthened through coordinated action, effective tools, and strong partnerships.

The minister’s visit to Brussels took place at the invitation of SEDE Chair Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann.
