Moldova will appoint Viorel Ursu as its next Ambassador to the Kingdom of Sweden. The parliamentary commission for foreign policy and European integration endorsed his candidacy.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi confirmed the decision and highlighted the government’s commitment to building an effective, results-driven diplomatic corps.
“Viorel Ursu brings exceptional experience in European affairs, democratic governance, and international cooperation. I am confident he will strengthen our partnership with Sweden, a key development partner for Moldova,” Popsoi said.
Viorel Ursu currently serves as Moldova’s Ambassador to the United States and the United Mexican States. Over the past three years, he has led efforts to deepen bilateral relations and advance Moldova’s strategic goals.

Throughout his career spanning over two decades, Ursu has built extensive expertise in international relations, democratic development, and EU enlargement. He previously led the Europe Department at the Open Society Foundation in London, where he managed programs on good governance, the rule of law, and civil society. Before that, he worked as a senior policy analyst at the Open Society European Policy Institute in Brussels, contributing to EU policy initiatives for the Eastern Partnership region.
Ursu began his diplomatic career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later taught international law and human rights at the State University of Moldova. He holds a master’s degree in European studies from the College of Europe in Poland and a bachelor’s degree in law from the State University of Moldova.
