(VIDEO) Reactions to US-Imposed Tariffs on Moldova—Nistor Talks Exports, Grosu on the EU Market

The United States will impose a 25% tariff on Moldovan exports starting August 1, 2025. Doina Nistor says the rate fell from the initially announced 31%, and the decision arrives amid a complex global trade landscape. The Minister of Economy added that her government has taken the necessary steps to minimize the measure’s impact.

She also noted that she consulted with Moldovan exporters active in the U.S. market and held discussions with American counterparts in recent months.

“Last year, the U.S. ranked 14th (2.5%) among our trading partners. Meanwhile, our exports to the U.S. dropped by 40% in recent months. We will keep talking with U.S. authorities and local producers to identify the most viable options for maintaining our competitiveness abroad. At the same time, we’re exploring alternative markets, especially the European Union, which already absorbs three out of four Moldovan products,” Nistor said.

Speaker Igor Grosu told the press that this measure does not target Moldova alone. He explained that Moldovan diplomats and Economy Ministry officials are negotiating with their U.S. counterparts but urged business leaders to pivot toward the nearly 500 million–strong European market.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump sent letters to Moldova, Algeria, Brunei, Iraq, Libya, and the Philippines to inform their governments about the tariffs taking effect on August 1, 2025.
