Blow on the track in Chisinau: a Romanian company breaks the oligarch Shor’s monopoly

The Romanian company Kronaero, founded by entrepreneur Ciprian-Mihail Oprescu, will begin ground handling operations at Chisinau International Airport starting August 1, 2025, after receiving official authorization from the Civil Aeronautical Authority of the Republic of Moldova, bani.md reports.

Kronaero will handle a full range of ground services, including passenger boarding and disembarkation, baggage transport, and aircraft servicing. To prepare for its launch, the company invested approximately €10 million, purchasing modern equipment such as Cobus buses and TLD machinery required for certification.

The company’s first client in Chisinau will be Wizz Air, one of Moldova’s leading airlines, currently holding about 20% of the national air transport market.

Until now, Aeroport Handling, a company linked to fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor, has dominated the airport’s ground services market. Despite Avia Invest losing its concession contract in 2023, Aeroport Handling retained its dominant position.

Kronaero’s entry will break the monopoly, stimulate competition, and attract new investment into Chisinau’s airport infrastructure. The move also signals a step toward greater transparency and efficiency in Moldova’s aviation sector.
