The government has launched the platform www.contorinteligent.energie.gov.md, creating an online hub dedicated to smart metering in Moldova. Citizens can use this platform to learn how smart meters work, understand their benefits, and discover who can take advantage of them.
The platform supports a pilot project to install 100,000 smart meters in Moldovan households by 2027, covering about seven percent of all consumers.
So far, project teams have delivered and installed 35,000 meters in the northern and central-southern regions, and they plan to install an additional 25,000 meters by the end of 2026. The project receives support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Moldova and the government of Italy.

Cristina Pereteatcu, State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, said, “Smart metering is more than just a new device; it acts as a key tool to digitalize the energy sector and optimize energy use for everyone’s benefit. Most importantly, it empowers consumers by showing real energy consumption. It also helps distributors collect data and intervene remotely when needed.”
She added that smart metering enables distributors to send accurate bills without estimates, allows users to monitor and adjust their consumption, provides access to differential pricing based on usage hours, speeds up operator interventions during faults, automates billing, and promotes responsible, greener energy consumption.
Cristina Pereteatcu concluded, “All these advances bring us closer to European energy standards and support our goals for energy efficiency and sustainability.”
