Switzerland Extends Sanctions: New EU Measures Against Interference in Moldova

On August 12, the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER) announced the expansion of its sanctions lists, aligning with the European Union’s 18th package of measures against Russia. The updated measures target both individuals and entities involved in actions aimed at undermining regional stability — including attempts to influence Moldova’s upcoming referendum on EU membership and the 2024 presidential elections.

The EU adopted the new sanctions on July 18 as part of its response to Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. Acting under its mandate, the EAER added several entities to Switzerland’s sanctions lists, following the EU’s lead.

Switzerland also incorporated additional sanctions introduced by the EU on July 15, concerning Moldova, and implemented them on July 18.

According to Swiss authorities, the sanctions target those linked to Russian-led efforts to interfere in Moldova’s democratic processes.
