On Miron Costin Street, at the intersection with Moscow Boulevard, lies the memorial complex “Sons of the Motherland – Sacred Memory”, commonly known as Afghan Park. It is a place rich in history and nature, perfect for walks and relaxation, and one of the most popular parks in the capital, especially after its renovation.
In 2020, the Chisinau City Hall replaced the paving on the central alley and several secondary alleys. The lawn was rehabilitated, an automated irrigation system was installed, and public lighting was modernized with LED technology.
The fountain was also restored and is now musical, offering a light-and-water show. Playgrounds for children were added throughout the park after the renovation.
At the heart of the park stands the “Sons of the Motherland – Sacred Memory” Memorial Complex, dedicated to the soldiers who died in the Afghanistan war (1979–1989). The complex features a grand sculpture of a grieving mother and tall white pillars reaching toward the sky. At five meters above ground, the pillars join together in a bronze crown of thorns. Surrounding the monument are granite plaques engraved with the names of the fallen soldiers. The memorial stands 15 meters high.
Today, the park also hosts public events, exhibitions, and themed fairs, making it both a cultural and commemorative.
