Businessman Alexandru Munteanu, who has been living in Ukraine for more than 20 years, could become the new candidate for the position of Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova. At 61 years old, Munteanu describes himself as an “American of Moldovan origin” and has no political experience, reports zdg.md.
The information about Alexandru Munteanu’s potential candidacy for the post of Prime Minister of Moldova has been confirmed to ZdG by several independent sources. According to the same information, his candidacy is expected to be discussed at a meeting of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) scheduled for Tuesday, October 14.
Munteanu, aged 61, has so far maintained a low public profile.
Public data shows that he is among the founders of the American Chamber of Commerce in Moldova (AmCham Moldova), the founding president of the French Alliance in Moldova (for more than 25 years), and co-chair of the Business Advisory Council for South-Eastern Europe and Eurasia (BAC SEE).
He holds a Master’s degree in Economic Policy Management from Columbia University (New York) and a Master’s degree in Physics from Moscow State University (MGU).
In 2018, Alexandru Munteanu ran in the internal elections of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, an organization representing the interests of American and international companies active on the Ukrainian market. In that context, the Chamber published Munteanu’s biography, in which he presented himself as an “American of Moldovan origin, settled in Ukraine for 20 years.”
In the same presentation, he mentioned that he had been awarded the title of Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour.
Munteanu stated that he had worked for the World Bank (Washington D.C.) — where Maia Sandu also worked — for almost 10 years, with a short interruption. At the World Bank, he was responsible for the Middle East and North Africa region. He also worked for one of France’s oldest banks, Crédit Lyonnais (Paris), and for the National Bank of Moldova.
Munteanu is the founder of a private equity investment firm – 4i Capital Partners, which specializes in managing investments in Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova.
“I have led investments for WNISEF/Horizon Capital, Dragon Capital, and currently for my own firm, 4i Capital Partners. I have served on numerous boards of commercial companies and am currently a member of the boards of Portmone, Venbest, and Prime Group (where I hold the position of board chairman in all three), as well as on the board of Bank Credit Dnepr as an independent director.
I have taught electrical engineering and courses on currency, banking, and financial markets, and I plan to return to teaching at some point in my career.
I currently serve on the Board of Governors of the Pechersk School International (PSI) in Kyiv, where I hold the positions of treasurer and chair of the Finance and Risk Committee,” Munteanu said in 2018.
In 2005, as director of the WNISEF office in Moldova, Alexandru Munteanu announced the creation of a fund management company – Horizon Capital.
