Champion of Heritage: Varvara Buzila received the Europa Nostra award

Ethnographer Varvara Buzila received the Europa Nostra award at the “Heritage Champion” forum in Brussels, honoring her lifetime dedication to Moldovan traditions, folk costumes, crafts, and cultural identity.

“With the elegance and dignity that define her, Varvara Buzila represented the Republic of Moldova in a moment of great emotion — a European recognition of a lifetime dedicated to traditions, folk costume, crafts, and our cultural identity. With over 45 years of experience, Ms. Buzilă is undoubtedly a symbol of Moldova’s intangible heritage — a personality who has transformed her passion for tradition into an irreplaceable cultural mission,” highlighted the Ministry of Culture.

The Ministry noted that Buzila contributed to including several elements on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, such as:

  • Male Group Caroling Tradition (2013)
  • Traditional Techniques of Carpet Making in Romania and Moldova (2016)
  • Cultural Practices Associated with March 1st (2017)
  • Art of the Altita Shirt, a cultural identity element in Romania and Moldova (2022)

Varvara Buzila is one of three researchers in the “Heritage Champions” category awarded that year who came from countries not participating in the Creative Europe program.
