The documentary Electing Ms Santa, directed by Moldovan filmmaker Raisa Razmerita, had its world premiere on November 13 at the prestigious Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF)—one of Europe’s most important film events.

Its selection for PÖFF’s official competition represents a major achievement for both the director and the Moldovan film industry, placing Razmerita’s work among the strong and relevant films showcased annually at this A-category festival.

At its 29th edition, PÖFF features 17 feature films—16 world premieres and one international premiere. The festival runs from November 7 to 23 in Estonia’s capital, Tallinn.

Electing Ms Santa tells the story of Elena, a 42-year-old woman from a small Moldovan village who divides her life between caring for her community and pursuing her own aspirations. Known for her annual tradition of dressing as Santa Claus, Elena decides to take an unexpected step: running for mayor. Filmed over seven years, the documentary quietly follows her efforts to break free from the roles imposed by family and society, resulting in an honest portrait of personal transformation, courage, and the search for meaning in a changing world.

The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (BNFF), also known as PÖFF (Pimedate Ööde filmifestival), has been held annually since 1997 and is one of the largest film festivals in Northern Europe. In 2024, it was elevated to A-list status by FIAPF.
