Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, is paying a two-day official visit to Chisinau on the occasion of the Republic of Moldova taking over the six-month presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

During his visit, Alain Berset will meet with President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu. The discussions will focus on the priorities set by Chisinau for its mandate at the helm of the Committee of Ministers, as well as on ways to deepen cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the Council of Europe.

The official’s agenda includes several key topics for the region, among them continued support for Ukraine and holding the Russian Federation accountable for the crime of aggression. Another major point is the promotion of a New Democratic Pact for Europe, aimed at strengthening the continent’s democratic security. The talks will also address increasingly complex challenges related to disinformation and foreign informational interference in democratic processes.

During his visit, Alain Berset will attend the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, which gathers around 60 parliamentarians from the 46 member states. He will also participate in the meetings of PACE’s Bureau and the PACE ad-hoc committee.

This is Alain Berset’s second visit to Chisinau. The official last visited the Republic of Moldova in February 2025.

The Republic of Moldova took over the presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on 14 November and will hold it until May 2026.
