The Republic of Moldova will introduce a new driving license model in 2026 as part of the program to harmonize national legislation with European Union standards. Authorities will keep all driving licenses already in circulation valid until the expiration date printed on them.

Officials will put the new driving license into circulation after meeting all technical requirements, no later than May 31, 2026. The Public Services Agency will announce the exact date when citizens can start applying for the new document.

The new license will feature enhanced protection against counterfeiting. Authorities will introduce a QR code that allows fast and secure verification of the document and its data through the government platform verifica.gov.md. This step supports the digitalization of public services and enables instant authenticity checks. The new model will also include expanded information on possible medical restrictions for drivers.

Authorities clarified that citizens do not need to replace their current driving licenses. All previously issued licenses remain valid until their expiration dates. Licenses issued under the 1995 model remain valid, those issued in 2015 and 2019 remain valid until expiry, while licenses issued under the 2008 model are no longer valid because their validity period has ended.

Authorities will issue the new driving license gradually, alongside existing licenses, without requiring a mass replacement.
