The Republic of Moldova will not return to the cheap electricity previously supplied by the Moldovan State District Power Plant (MGRES), and the reality of the energy market differs from nostalgic perceptions of the past. Acting Director General of Energocom Eugeniu Buzatu made the statement during the Rezoomat program on RealitateaTV.

“Since January 2025, we have stopped purchasing electricity from MGRES. With all due respect to those citizens who feel nostalgic, I do not believe that bread at 16 kopecks and salami at one ruble will ever return. We must look at things realistically and with common sense,” Eugeniu Buzatu said.

Buzatu explained that past prices did not reflect economic realities.

“The price of one megawatt we obtained from MGRES at that time, 66 dollars, was far below the market level, especially considering the operating efficiency of the Cuciurgan power plant, which in my view is quite outdated. The plant is morally obsolete,” he added.

Chisinau stopped purchasing electricity from MGRES on January 1, 2025. Authorities did not extend the contract with the Moldavskaya State District Power Plant amid uncertainties over gas supplies to the left bank of the Dniester, caused by Gazprom decision to halt natural gas deliveries to the Transnistrian region starting from the same date.
