Gavrilita: To avoid a hiring freeze, the government could eliminate some vacant public positions.

The government may eliminate certain positions instead of maintaining a hiring moratorium in some public institutions. Finance Minister Adrian Gavrilita said that if institutions have functioned for years without filling vacant roles, authorities can cut those positions.

“Today I signed a notice to my colleagues so we can review this practice. We need to see how many such positions exist. We may reduce them in principle, so we no longer need to freeze them but eliminate them. If we have managed without them for so many years, we should remove them from the organizational chart,” Gavrilita said.

At the end of last year, the government extended the hiring moratorium for vacant positions established as of November 30, 2025, until December 31, 2026.
