The Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Moldova, Iwona Piorko, says that every voice represented in Parliament is backed by citizens, referring to the dialogue initiated with the opposition in Chisinau. The official noted that European Commissioner Marta Kos also invited all parliamentary factions to discussions, and all accepted the invitation except the Party of Communists.
Speaking on the ZdCE podcast, Piorko emphasized that a democratic society—both within the European Union and beyond—requires the involvement of all political parties. She explained that her objective was not to persuade parties to support European integration, but to maintain open dialogue with parliamentary factions.
“Every voice represented in Parliament comes from citizens and must be heard. But when parties and politicians say they are pro-EU, we need to see this not only in words, but also in actions—how they vote and how they maintain a responsible public discourse on European integration,” Piorko said.
She stressed that she does not interfere in internal political dynamics, focusing exclusively on issues related to European integration.
“This objective is enshrined in your Constitution, and we should all work toward it. All those I have met so far have confirmed their support for European integration and explained their reasons. This was not a meeting meant to convince me of anything. It was a first meeting, and I intend to continue this dialogue with them and with many other stakeholders so that we can work together to achieve the objective set by the citizens of this country,” the EU ambassador added.
Last week, Iwona Piorko met with Vasile Costiuc, leader of the Democracy at Home party, as well as with leaders of the Alternativa bloc—Ion Ceban, Gaik Vartanean, Ion Chicu, Mark Tkaciuk, and Alexandr Stoianoglo.
The EU Delegation in Chisinau announced that the ambassador has extended invitations for dialogue to leaders of the parliamentary opposition. Additional meetings with party leaders and parliamentary factions are expected in the coming days and weeks.
