Representatives discussed the Republic of Moldova’s experience in combating disinformation and its commitment to promoting human rights and the equal participation of women in decision making at an event of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), which Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi attended.

The event focused on the role of women in multilateralism and brought together senior Council of Europe officials, including PACE President Petra Bayr, Venice Commission President Marta Cartabia, and Head of the Directorate General of Democracy and Human Dignity (DGII) Marja Ruotanen.

In his speech, Mihai Popsoi outlined the challenges the Republic of Moldova faces in countering disinformation and stressed the need for international cooperation to address coordinated campaigns, including gender based ones. He also reaffirmed the country’s commitment to protecting fundamental human rights and promoting the equal participation of women in decision making at both national and international levels.

“Gender based disinformation threatens democracy, human rights, and social cohesion, and no country can combat it alone. The Republic of Moldova commits to promoting coordinated actions to address this challenge,” Mihai Popsoi said.

Organizers held the event in the context of the International Day of Women in Multilateralism, observed annually on 25 January. UNESCO established this day in 2021 to highlight the contribution of women to promoting human rights, peace, and sustainable development within the multilateral system.
