President Maia Sandu said that Nicu Popescu is part of the presidents team and promotes Moldovas image in the member states of the European Union. She made the statement during the TV8 program Black Box (Cutia Neagra) and noted that he does not receive a salary for this activity.
Asked why Mihai Popsoi does not know what Nicu Popescu is doing, the head of state explained that responsibility for the coordinators field of activity lies with Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov. At the same time, Maia Sandu said that coordination nevertheless exists with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The actions undertaken by Mr Popescu are more related to my own responsibilities and to the tasks I have to carry out. This work focuses on promoting the Republic of Moldova in the context of European integration. We need to engage with both governing and opposition parties in European Union countries, as well as with civil society in European states,” the president said.
Nicu Popescu was elected as an MP on the PAS party lists in the 2025 parliamentary elections but announced that he would give up the mandate. Maia Sandu appointed him by presidential decree as Special Envissary for European Affairs and Strategic Partnerships.
