President Maia Sandu says that the withdrawal of Russian troops from the left bank of the Nistru River remains the main obstacle to Moldovas reintegration. She reiterates that these forces must leave the country through peaceful means.

Speaking in the TV8 studio, the president said she discussed this issue with European leaders. According to Maia Sandu, if the European Union helps resolve this problem, the rest of the reintegration process will be manageable.

“There are countries that ask how progress can be made if we fail to achieve reintegration. I explained what the main problem is. The key issue is how we remove the presence of the Russian army peacefully. This is the biggest challenge. If the European Union can help us solve this issue, which we have raised, then the other elements can be resolved,” Sandu said.

Previously, the president said that Moldova has two possible scenarios for accession to the European Union. The first option предусматривает accession as a reintegrated state, while the second involves a two step process in which reunification takes place after Moldova joins the European Union. The authorities in Chisinau say they want to apply the first option.
