Foreign Minister Mihai Popsoi urged Moldovans who hold Romanian citizenship and identity cards to ensure they also have alternative documents. His statement comes amid the annulment of Romanian identity cards for some individuals by authorities across the Prut River.

Popsoi said the Chisinau administration has no leverage to intervene in Romania s internal processes. Speaking on TVR Moldova, the minister stressed that the annulment of identity documents does not affect a person s status as a Romanian citizen.

“We do not have many tools to intervene in Romania s domestic policy or to influence policies related to Romanian identity cards. Citizenship is certainly not affected in any way. This process started several years ago and continues today. It creates certain obstacles, and our message to citizens has always been to make sure they have at least one alternative document. If there is a risk that a Romanian ID card becomes invalid, it is good to have a travel document, whether a passport of the Republic of Moldova or of Romania, to avoid complicated situations. We are now facing problems that also involve children,” Popsoi said.

Tens of thousands of Romanian citizens born in the Republic of Moldova have lost their identity cards following legislative changes introduced in Romania in 2023. The new rules limit the number of people registered at the same address to ten. If this limit is exceeded, authorities annul the residence entry in the document, which renders the identity card invalid.
