The Government of Romania approved the technical and economic indicators and authorized the start of construction works for a new bridge over the Prut River in the Albita–Leuseni area, Vaslui County, bani.md reports. Authorities estimate the project at 256.9 million lei and set the execution period at 24 months.
Romania will finance the project from non reimbursable external funds and the state budget. The new bridge will measure 420 meters in total length, including access ramps, and will include four traffic lanes, two in each direction.
Builders will locate the site outside the built up area of Dranceni locality, on the territory of both Romania and the Republic of Moldova, without requiring expropriations. The project includes demolition of the existing bridge built in 1954 and construction of a new two span structure, as well as installation of a temporary bridge to maintain traffic during the works.
The temporary solution will measure about 300 meters, including a 95 meter provisional bridge designed according to hydraulic requirements. Engineers will build two adjacent structures for the two traffic directions and connect them to DN 24B on the Romanian side and to the M1 road on the Moldovan side.
Technical documentation shows that the current bridge, which measures 163.4 meters and has three spans, falls into technical class IV and remains in unsatisfactory condition, based on a 2021 expert assessment. Authorities decided that constructing a new bridge is more justified than rehabilitating the existing one.
The Albita bridge will become the second four lane bridge between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, after the Ungheni–Zagarancea bridge, part of the A8 Targu Mures – Iasi – Ungheni Motorway. Workers resumed construction at Ungheni after weather conditions improved. NESS Project Europe is building the Ungheni bridge, after launching works in April 2025 with an 18 month execution term and a 10 year warranty.
