The Government of the Republic of Moldova approved today the signing of a social security agreement with the Government of Quebec, enabling Moldovan citizens who have worked in Quebec to receive social benefits.

Under the agreement, Moldovan citizens will be eligible for old-age pensions, disability pensions caused by general health conditions, pensions and allowances for work-related disabilities or occupational diseases, survivor’s pensions, and other benefits established in accordance with the treaty’s provisions.

“This agreement will allow for the establishment and payment of old-age pensions, disability pensions, survivor’s pensions, as well as many other social benefits related to work accidents or occupational diseases. An important element of this agreement, as with other social security agreements, is that if a person works in Canada or Quebec for several years and also works in the Republic of Moldova, these periods are added together to establish the respective pension,” said Natalia Plugaru at the Government meeting.

According to official statistics, approximately 15,000 Moldovan citizens live in Quebec, who will directly benefit from the agreement.

“The agreement with Quebec joins the long list of social protection agreements that the Republic of Moldova has signed with other states. Through these agreements, every citizen enjoys social rights, regardless of where they work,” added Natalia Plugaru.

So far, Moldova has signed social security agreements with 20 countries, 18 of which are in force: Romania, Bulgaria, Portugal, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Austria, Estonia, the Czech Republic, the Kingdom of Belgium, Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Germany, Turkey, Belarus, Italy, Greece, Spain, and Latvia.
