The most wanted criminal in India, according to police in Punjab, was detained near the border with the Republic of Moldova at the end of last week based on an Interpol red notice.
According to Indian authorities, he is associated with the criminal gang of Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, who is currently imprisoned, and authorities accuse him in 128 cases, including murder, extortion, arms trafficking, and drug trafficking.
Contacted by IPN, the head of the International Police Cooperation Directorate within the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that all competent authorities are in contact and are verifying the individual. Authorities are examining the circumstances of the detention and the possibility of extradition to India.
“Amritpal Singh is wanted in several serious criminal cases in Punjab and had fled abroad for a considerable period,” the Punjab Police said in a statement published on the X network.
Indian authorities say legal and diplomatic procedures for extradition are underway so that the detainee can be brought before a court in India.
According to Indian sources, although Jaggu Bhagwanpuria remains in prison, he continues to coordinate drug and extortion networks through smuggled mobile phones and encrypted communications, with links traced to operatives in Pakistan, Canada and the United States. Individuals affiliated with the group continue their criminal activities.
