The Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) will send to the Venice Commission the amendment through which Herman von Hebel was appointed to the Prosecutors’ Evaluation Commission. The information was confirmed for Realitatea by the party’s spokesperson Adriana Vlas.

The European Commission has asked the authorities of the Republic of Moldova to submit to the Venice Commission the legislative amendment recently adopted by Parliament that modified the procedure for appointing international members to the commission responsible for evaluating prosecutors. The statement was made by Markus Lammert, spokesperson of the European Commission for democracy, justice, and the rule of law.

Earlier, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said in discussions with journalists that the decision to approve such an amendment had been consulted with development partners.

On March 5, Parliament voted in two readings an amendment allowing the appointment of international experts to external evaluation commissions with a simple majority of 51 votes, if they initially fail to obtain the qualified majority of 61 votes.

The document was included in the draft law on security measures for judges and has been challenged by the opposition at the Constitutional Court of Moldova.
