Maia Sandu, among the recipients of the highest European distinction

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has been included among the first laureates of the European Order of Merit, a new award granted by the European Parliament to individuals who have made significant contributions to European integration.

Roberta Metsola announced the decision in Strasbourg. Maia Sandu became an honorary member of the order alongside several prominent figures, including Pietro Parolin and former Irish president Mary Robinson.

In the category of distinguished members, the highest recognition, the order honored Angela Merkel, former Solidarity movement leader Lech Walesa and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Other members of the order include the Irish rock band U2, chef and philanthropist Jose Andres and basketball star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

A committee of prominent European figures selected the laureates based on nominations from heads of state, speakers of national parliaments and leaders of EU institutions.

The official award ceremony will take place between May 18 and 21 in Strasbourg during a plenary session of the European Parliament.
