The Republic of Moldova is at the center of European discussions on regional security during the third edition of the Black Sea Security Conference held in Chisinau. In a video message to participants, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos highlighted the strategic importance of the region for the stability of the entire continent.

“The war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine has fundamentally transformed the region and prompted us to adopt a stronger and more strategic European position,” Marta Kos said.

She also emphasized the support provided to Moldova in the face of hybrid pressures and security challenges.

“We are investing in the resilience of our partner countries, including your host, the Republic of Moldova, which faces hybrid threats and external pressure. In this regard, EU enlargement is a strategic investment in security,” she added.

Marta Kos underlined that integrating Moldova and Ukraine into the European Union would directly contribute to regional stability and strengthen democratic institutions. She also stressed the importance of developing infrastructure and connectivity, particularly in energy and transport.

“Our connectivity agenda in the region serves the same security objectives. It provides alternative energy infrastructure, transport corridors, and digital links. The situation in the Middle East shows why it is so important to have alternative options. The European Commission fully supports the efforts you are making today in Chisinau to build a comprehensive and forward-looking vision for Black Sea regional security,” Kos said.

The conference brings together delegations from over 30 countries and is organized under the auspices of the Crimea Platform in the context of the war launched by Russia against Ukraine.

The event continues the dialogue initiated in Bucharest in 2023 and Sofia in 2024, addressing topics such as regional security, freedom of navigation, protection of critical infrastructure, and strengthening cooperation between states.
