Authorities detained a 51-year-old man from Ungheni, internationally wanted for human trafficking for sexual exploitation, on Wednesday, April 1. They extradited him from Prague and placed him in custody for 30 days.
The police reported that the National Inspectorate of Investigations’ Center for Combating Human Trafficking added the man to the international wanted list in 2019 at the request of PCCOCS prosecutors. He had previously been sentenced to eight years in prison.
According to the investigation, in December 2011, the man, together with accomplices, recruited a woman and transported her to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. There, authorities say, the victim’s documents were confiscated, and she was forced through physical and psychological violence to provide paid sexual services.
Under current legislation in the Republic of Moldova, a person convicted of such an offense can face up to 15 years of imprisonment.
