Maia Sandu said that a potential unification with Romania could help the Republic of Moldova join the European Union more quickly. In an interview with Le Monde, she stressed that a majority of citizens must decide on such a step.
According to the president, reunification across the Prut River could offer an alternative path to EU integration—potentially without the Transnistrian region. At the same time, she expressed confidence that Moldova can still join the EU by 2030 through reforms, particularly in justice and anti-corruption.
“We are working actively in this direction. Of course, we still need to complete important reforms, but we will fulfill our commitments, especially in justice and the fight against corruption. We are already seeing the first results, with convictions in major corruption cases,” Maia Sandu said.
Asked whether hesitation among some EU member states regarding Ukraine’s accession—while Moldova and Ukraine are expected to advance together—could affect Moldova’s path, Sandu said she hopes the situation will improve following recent elections in Hungary and that EU countries will open negotiation chapters.
She also highlighted the support of France and Emmanuel Macron for Moldova.
